important fact to ME is that on the Sixth House, canonically the Niereds' (the sex troops) final exam was memorizing erotic poetry. the Sixth House own prime directive is making sure all their citizens are as attractive and fuckable and erotically capable as possible at all times. and they're institutionally encouraged to be nerds. and when Palamedes was bored in the River bubble and only had one terrible book to read, he spent 8 months writing fix-it fanfiction on the walls.
what i'm saying is that birthday cake erotica would have been GOOD.
#trb.txt#tlt thoughts#palamedes sextus#the locked tomb#cam didnt want him to write it bc it would have been too hot#his fiction would have caused a moral panic due to being too hot. nona the ninth would have been 3 pages long#btw source on this is the short story the mysterious study of dr sex

all the rise boys get done dirty on characterization by fandom in different ways i think. (not ALL the time every fanwork etc etc these are just like, trends i tend to notice?) every fandom suffers from losing character nuance.
- leo iâve talked about plenty on this blog, how some of his canon traits (genuine belief in his skill and cockiness, capacity for joy, his manipulativeness whether for good or ill) seem to get watered down or wiped off the board and supplemented with generic sad boy. his struggles with purpose and identity and not wanting to fail somehow morph into âhe hates and completely holds no value for himselfâ
- donnieâs canon personality gets blurred out and largely replaced with whatever list of Neurodivergent Traits. and i think thereâs such a fine line to walk between exploring a character thatâs been word of god confirmed as on the spectrum and overwriting whatâs canonically there. itâs a hard needle to thread. it also feels like a lot of his canon emotiveness gets left off the table for some reason. bc he does have his moments of flat/deadpan delivery, but a lot of the time heâs honestly very emotive. he has the passion of a theatre kid and the vindictiveness of... also a theatre kid. and the mind of a scientist.
- raph loses so much of his rowdy teen boy energy itâs kind of wild? like interpretations sand off that heâs also impulsive and can be reckless and dumb and LOVES fighting and roughhousing and isnât the most eloquent person. suddenly thereâs this pitch perfect soft boy big bro who would never hurt a fly and always says the exact right supportive thing and singlehandedly raised his 3 brothers (which simultaneously sands off all the nuance of splinterâs issues emotionally connecting with his sons and how that affected all of them). and like i LOVE raph, heâs so full of love and care and anxiety, he clearly has learned to put a lot of work into being aware of his strength and size. but thereâs a difference you know?
- mikey is like. where raph gets overparentified by fanon, mikey gets over âfamily therapistâ-ed IMO. the impulsiveness, the goofiness, the powerful emotions including a VERY powerful temper, the flat-out dumb teen boy choices... they get ignored. suddenly thereâs this only very sweet and earnest boy who has read a hundred psychology books and runs group family therapy weekly or something. he is crying in his room bc leo and raph are arguing about something. which is so. he IS very sweet and can be very earnest and is full of love! he HAS come in with his opinions and unsolicited advice a couple of times and life coached for the greater good. but thereâs a difference between what he does in canon and the role he gets in fanon.
#rottmnt#rise of the tmnt#idk this is not a very eloquent rundown its very hard to explain exactly my vibe#ig the long story short is i feel like a lot of their most interesting and fun qualities get left in the dust#mikey as family therapist is getting under my skin the most rn i think its just so.#for as much as it seems like his brothers try to shelter him (esp raph with his overprotectiveness)..... i just dont see it#i dont see his brothers and definitely not his dad putting their issues on him like that...#him dragging donnie into that one dr feelings session and dragging draxum into a new moral alignment were different#than 'yeah everyone tells mikey their stuff and he has to do the labor of helping with it'#like it just doesnt vibe for me#i think he is very emotionally OPEN on all levels compared to his family#i think he is more likely to share when HE struggles#i dont think raph or leo is sitting with him at 3am like 'it all started when i was 4 and accidentally broke a plate' or what have you idk#it's all so ymmv i do just scroll past stuff i dont vibe with i dont drop hate on it i just#idk dudes its so hard to see the appeal in some of the choices made

Really tired of constantly seeing posts declaring that everyone in MXTX novels is complicated and 'morally grey' and that's what makes her works wonderfully written, and that everyone else who doesn't see that is stupid, or is 'demonising' characters and bashing them for rightfully criticising their shitty, very much unjustified actions.
And ironically it seems so simplistic to just declare that, because yes her stories are wonderfully written and complex, but not for that reason. You're clearly not reading her works and only spouting what you think her stories say. There are many morally grey characters in morally complex stories out there, but MDZS IS NOT ONE OF THEM.
NONE OF THE MAIN CHARACTERS (i.e protagonists and their male leads except for LBH maybe) ARE MORALLY GREY OR MORALLY COMPLEX.
THEY ARE ALL MORALLY RIGHTEOUS.
Just take a closer look at their actions compared to the actions of literally everyone else around them, it's not that hard to see.
Not to mention that MXTX herself literally says that WWX and LWJ are both morally ideal and that ahe hopes her readers can be like them, but people seem to have no respect for the word of authors in the name of their self projection onto the characters being contradicted nowadays đ
(also saw someone dismissively say that HC may think that the world revolves around XL or whatever, but others don't and they're right??
First of all, did you even read the novel? HC made his judgement based on how others treated him versus how XL did when he was a CHILD. And how XL continues to treat others to this day. He is well within his rights to think the world of XL, especially since XL suffered more than every other person and still doesn't succumb to evil, despite having every right to do so, miles more than others. He all but regards XL as his moral compass, because he's proof that truly good people do exist in this world, and not ONE other person in the novel is shown to be as good as him.)
One of the reasons why I really don't like the Xianle Trio is this; neither FX nor MQ seem to regard XL as his own person with his own agency, who is capable of making his own decisions initially as HC does, and only near the end of the novel do they let up a bit when their asses had to be saved by XL multiple times. (especially considering what fools they made of themselves in that spiderweb cave lmao)
Both of them try to enforce XL ALL THE TIME ("Your Highness don't do this or don't do that or don't say this or don't go there or don't talk to him"), as if XL has not survived perfectly well on his own without them FOR 800 YEARS.
The difference between them and HC is clearly spelled out when FC asks HC about why he is not stopping XL, and HC replies that while he may not agree with some of XL's decisions, he would never force him to do what he thinks is correct, something both MQ and FX are CONSTANTLY shown to try to do.
Like please. Xianle Trio who? More like suffering XL and his pair of nuisances who think themselves to be his babysitters. And most of the time he's the one babysitting them.
Another thing that irks me is that their frequent arguments are often played off for laughs, but XL is truly a saint, because if my friends were constantly bickering over petty things all throughout our dangerous journey and giving me nothing but headaches, especially in survival situations, I'd given them the boot a long time ago.
#mdzs#I know a lot of the new people's understanding of the novel is warped by fandom misconceptions#which is tragic#because mdzs is NOT a morally complex story with everyone doing messed up things because they were justified!#it's a story about a morally righteous person struggling to do the right thing by going against the status quo#and fighting the corrupt shackles of a power hungry society#it's about the dangers of mob mentality!#it's about how you do the right thing#even when it's hard#even when it takes your blood sweat and tears#even if you get villianised for it#even if you're standing alone#even if it kills you#even when you don't get anything for it in return especially then#that's the true story#it's about the struggles of classism and the privileges of the elite#ironically enough you're missing the entire point of the novel if you just declare it as morally complex like no#the ones whose morals are right and was justified in their actions made pretty clear#the ones who are not is also made pretty clear that their actions were NOT justified#tgcf#xie lian#feng xin#mu qing#hua cheng#this turned into a rant#this was supposed to be short sigh#lan wangji#svsss

I want to say that it's unrealistic for Gwen and Miles to be so dramatic about love so young but when I remember what being their age and experiencing falling in love for the first time was like I say they're not being dramatic enough

The necromancer, Bonaparte, stared at the horizon with bored black eyes. Beneath his gaze, the visitors bearing their flag of truce were ushered forwards by his skeletal honour guard.
âI will accept your surrender now.â
The commanding officer - not the original, but the surviving one - stepped towards the tyrant. She wore a Brigidâs Cross made of dirty reeds on her lapel.Â
She could see the setting sun reflected in the necromancerâs obsidian gaze. Soon, the light would fade and dead would be at their strongest.
âIâm afraid I cannot offer you a surrender, Emperor of corpses. But I will beg for mercy, for you are the only soldier in your army with a heart to feel it.â
âMy heart stopped beating long ago.â
âYet I pray that enough feeling echoes in it still to grant clemency, despite your profanities.â
Then did the necromancer turn his gaze towards her. They were eyes that read fate and defied laws. She could have sworn she felt the air curdle, the ground buckle, and the light twist with its weight.
âOh, your kings and queens are all so horrified by me and by what I do. They call it a crime against nature, a sin against god. Or *gods*.â He gestured to the cross on her uniform. âBut if one has a war to fight - and if one believes in equal parts that war is *just* but also that no war *can* be just ⌠is this not the most ethical, most correct thing? To fight the war in such a way that does not harm your subjects? Surely only a coward would let the disapproval of a few dozen gods sway them from saving a life?â
He paused as if to take a breath, but his chest did not move (he no longer needed air and considered it ill-disciplined to fall back into the habit of breathing).Â
The officer paused too. His words felt heavy in her head. His dry voice scratching uncomfortably at her mental walls. But in his eyes, she still saw the last dying rays of sunlightâŚ
âI suppose, tyrant of sunset, that were I in your shoes I *would* be tempted to keep harm and death from me and mine. But even if I could, I hope I would not do what you have done. For I would fear what other harm I was doing.â
âAnd what harm is that?â
âTo put it simply, marshal of styx, those bodies that fight for you? Theyâre *not *yours*. You stole them. Dug up graveyards, cracked open tombs, emptied ossuaries.â She tutted and sunlight flared in her disapproval. âMaybe a few are honoured comrades, true believers, but most? They wouldnât even know you to say good morning, yet alone to salute. Their spirits may be gone, but that doesnât mean you get to make their dust dance.âÂ
âYou defy me because you think my army is ⌠theft?â
âThatâs my line in the dirt. It may not be a good line. It may be a damned stupid line. I donât know. But there it is - I know it, I feel it, itâs mine - like the bones that hold me upright.â
Bonaparte permitted himself a small sigh as a luxury.
âAnd after you die, those same bones will bow to me.â

i'm reading an article on guanyin that's really re-affirming some specific opinions i had developed regarding the importance thereof to the sub-narrative of jin guangyao in mdzs
nodding to myself i am onto things occasionally.
#i am going to write fanfic about it instead of meta. i think.#anyway a very short summary is it's a way to cue us in that we're not supposed to condemn him#and that whether or not we hate him personally he's utterly deserving of compassion and a compassionate person himself#changing to match a situational need (=saving someone) isn't a moral failing in guanyin-stories#(according to this text and what else i've read)#fascinating notion suggested in this text that guanyin is about the concept of permitting/emphasizing with#the desire to go beyond karmic determinism!!! to change your fate!!!#jin guangyao#mdzs

We could have learned more about Vol'jin in the heritage questline. Like the entire part about the rush'kah mask.
You know, like one Vol'jin wears thats on the banner and tabard to represent the Darkspear. Maybe Rokhan reminiscing when Vol'jin made his own to emphasize the meaning behind them.
#Instead we got Rokhan acting like nothing pre BFA happened#Vol'jin getting more of a spotlight through the expansions is an In The Writing Room problem not a canon issue if it even IS an issue at al#He was front and center because he was all his tribe had in terms of someone to turn to#He refused help because everyone said this was HIS duty.#Rokhan is well aware of the situation Vol'jin was put into and doesnt envy it to any degree#you can easily flesh out the Darkspear as a tribe without resorting to some meta âhey we shouldve given Rokhan more attention huh huh hahah#I think people may have forgotten Rokhan was already a veteran by WC3#I can not imagine in any context Old Vet Rokhan saying HE was hard done by when Vol'jin lost himself in his own duty and purpose#he is not Zalazane 2.0 I assure you.#It would be much more IC for Rokhan to mention Vol'jin being defined by his legacy/took all of his tribes burdens for himself like SOTH sai#and how asking for help is always a better option#Yknow like the entire moral of the heritage questline?#If you just want more Rokhan say it instead of copy pasting it into his dialogue and -#Making him sound like the kid who wasn't the favourite#Basically the less inserting the opinions that the fanbase has on the story into the dialogue itself the better lmao#Im looking at you voiceline about Voljin spending such a short time as warchief

ALLL MORAL OREL FANS
you wanna see a fix where Clay is confronted by literal god???
Here it is!!!
Beseech
After the Danielle incident and the hunting tragedy, Clay Puppington receded to his study most of the time. Making no attempt to change, he would waste his days drinking and having an affair with both Censordoll and Stopframe. But, we all know that the lord giveth, and the lord taketh away.
âClayton Middleinitial Puppington!â
âG-âŚGod!?â
âIt is I, the Heavenly Father.â His voice shook the room, and boomed into his body.
âWha-âŚWhy have you visited me, Lord?â Clay said, clearly in a daze.
âYou have a lesson to learn, Clayton. You give your own
lessons and stories while convoluting their meaning to fit your way of destructive, abusive life. It is time that you learn, mortal. The Lordâs mercy only reaches you if it remains pure.â
A sword of pure light appeared. As the Lord held it, the power
changed its hue.
âLord, what are you doing!?â Clay stepped back. He knew that
he was in trouble, and he couldnât bribe this one to go away. The sword was raised, and all the light in the room was focused only on Clay.
âWhat is necessary to keep my world pure.â
âWhyâŚ?!â
"Why!? Pathetic. Unable to realize thy faults. Let us see your life, and what it really was."
Everything fades. There is a young boy holding a gun. It shakes in his hands as he struggles to bear such a deadly tool.
"It's a tradition in the Puppington family that the head of the household would pass off this gun to the eldest son."
"Wow, dad⌠But I don't think I could kill an animal. That seems too mean."
"Son, nature was made to be hunted. We get to 'play god.'"
âPlay God?? Golly Pops⌠that doesnât sound very rightâŚ
You know the sixty-third commandment! âThou shalt never hold a gun without anything to shoot at!â And we have to follow Godâs rules!â
The memory switches to a young Puppington, holding that
same gun, while ketchup was spewed all over the childâs body.
âClay! Clay! Clayton! Open your fucking eyes!â Clayâs body was shook violently.
âWhat?? I didnât do anything!â Clay springs back to life, having
pretended he was dead. His mother then cried out
âOh thank the heavens! Lord, thank you-â She froze in the
middle of her sentence. She fell to the floor, her heart unresponsive.
âMom!â Clay ran to his now dead mother, understanding what he did.
âGet back!â Clayâs father pushed him back, slamming him to a wall. No CPR could be done, and Amanda Puppington was declared dead. The memory fades to black.
Clay was frozen.
âI-⌠I was so young, Father! I didnât know what I was doing! I was only six years old!â
âThen let us watch something more⌠recent, yes?â The memory flashes to the wilderness. Clay is an adult, and stands there with his twelve year-old son, Orel.
âDad⌠I think you might be *too* drunk.â
âI⌠Let me tell you something, Orel! Drunk is nature.â
âIâm not really comfortable hunting with you, Dad.â Orel is tense, gripping to the log heâs sitting on.
âYou arenât comfortable hunting with me? Ever tried hunting with you!?â Clay gulps down his liquor like itâs the last bottle of water in the desert.
âYâknow kid, your cup is always half empty. Look at me. You should be more like your old man and look on the blight side of life.â
âB-Blight?â Orel said, shivering from his fear.
âNo, I didnât say âbright,â" Clay interrupted, "I said blight. My life is sunny and blight. âBrightâ means the opposite â it means sudden withering death. And thatâs⌠not⌠Oh, who am I kidding, my life is full of brightâŚâ
âDad..?â Orel replied, terrified that his father would lose composure.
âOh, God.â
âWhatâs happening, Dad!?â Orel cried.
"Oh, I hate myselfâŚâ
He runs out of liquor in the bottle. He stares at his reflection, silently hoping that it would be the last time heâd have to see it.
âWhy do you quit working on me!?!â
Everything goes silent. No birds chirping, no crickets, no owls in the night.
âShe always fools me, Orel. âIâll make things better dear! Drink me! Put me inside of you, Iâm great!â And then she chokes me just like every other whore out there!! Theyâre all worthless, kid! Every woman. Donât let âem get ya! All of them just wanna get ya! They just grab you and pull you into âem! And then youâre forced to stay in, pull out. Stay in, and pull out!! And then they cut ya! And they grip ya by the⌠right where it counts! And then they start SQUEEZING things out! Things that are like weights around your head! Youâre stuck there for the rest of your life, with NOWHERE to go and NO ONE to be!!! AAAAGH!!!â
The scene faded out.
"What's so bad about that?! It's useful advice!" Clay exclaimed, deluded by his own prejudice.
"Just wait, mortal."
The scene reappeared. It opens to clay and Orel sitting across from each other, with clay in a drunken stupor. Orel is now as far away from Clay as he can be while still on a log.
"It's time you became a man. Where's my rifle!?" Clay yells, searching for it/
"Dad, I don't think-"
"There it is! No mistakes, no accidents, no fuck-ups, no blunders."
"Dad! W-What are you doing?!"
"Somethin' important!!"
A single, lone spark flew. Following it was an ear-splitting bang. No noise could be heard after that, other than the ringing going through both of their ears.
"D-...DadâŚ"
The scene fades for the final time.
Clay was frozen.
"Do you realize thy fault now? Are you able to comprehend the weight of your sin?! Do you finally see that your actions have consequences, Puppington!?" The ethereal voice boomed. Its volume was so loud that Clay was shaken back into reality.
Clay was speechless. Instead of pleading for his case, he simply stood there thinking. He didn't need to speak, for his god could tell exactly what he was thinking.
I couldn't have done that. But I did. How? Why? What do I do!? What do I do?!
But then a thought hit him.
Just give up. You've been so dedicated to your Lord your entire life. Give everything to Him.
"PleaseâŚ" Clay said, hopeless and weak. Clay then fell to his knees. He didn't dare to raise his head, or so much as stand up.
"Please what?" The deity spoke. Tears began to roll down Clay's cheeks as he remained there kneeling before his God.
"Please⌠Have mercy," he muttered. He was too weak to raise his voice.
"Forgive me, Lord. Forgive me. I'm weak without you, God."
"You beseech for something you could not give to your own, Clayton. The kingdom of heaven does not allow those like you."
The sword of light raised up once more, as Clay said his final vow.
"I'm sorry, Orel."
A scream rang out. The scream of a weak, hopeless, self-destructive, and miserable young boy. The light disappeared, and all that was left was a soul, going to neither heaven nor hell. The soul was trapped in the mortal world, and had a chain around its neck.
Suddenly, Orel walked into the study. As he stepped further, something came into view.
The end of a chain that led directly to his neck.
RB AND LIKE I SPENT SO MUCH TKMD ON THIS OKAY BYE

In Nothing But Shadows, Ragnor tells James that heâs been waiting for James to come to him for help on his warlock powers, and James says heâs only ever wanted to be a Shadowhunter. I think this should have been explored much more in TLH, where James is struggling to differentiate himself from his warlock side but itâs hard because of his abilities and his warlock mark.
On the other hand, we have Lucie who always says she doesnât appreciate being overlooked (even though she ends up being overlooked through the whole narrative even though her power is more plot-relevant than Jamesâs). Objectively, Lucie has the more powerful ability between her and James, and she does not have a warlock mark and is unafraid to use her power. She has a willingness to learn about her warlock side. Therefore, I think she definitely should have started warlock training so we could see the way that James and Lucie have opposite views on their powers and whether they are a blessing or curse, something to hide away and tame or something to utilize. It would also be interesting to see because, although this is not discussed in TLH, it is mentioned in the short stories that even at a young age people in Shadowhunter society think that Lucie is never going to be married because of her warlock blood and that any little misstep could forever ruin her reputation. So her warlock training just adds even more risk but I think that seems like something Lucie would do regardless. It could have added much more dimension to Lucieâs character and furthered an antihero arc (that I so desperately wish would have happened).
#Iâm never finished complaining about Lucieâs lack of an antihero arc#sheâs a morally gray antagonist sry I donât make the rules#i thought this difference between James and Lucieâs views on their powers would have been so interesting if it was discussed#but of course it wasnât#Jamesâs power literally changed between the short stories and the start of TLH#honestly lucie and Jamesâs powers high key made no sense they were so random and disjointed so Iâm never gonna try to make sense of them#Iâm cursed from thinking about all this stupid potential#lucie herondale#the last hours#james herondale#chain of thorns spoilers#chain of thorns
